For me, LAZY MOM’s technicolor still lifes are ultimately about a certain kind of alchemy, wherein the (semi)edible trappings of domestic servitude are transformed into the makings of pure aesthetic gold. New York based Josie Keefe and Phyllis Ma are the creative team behind LAZY MOM, and they explained in an interview with Mold magazine, that the “original idea behind the character of LAZY MOM is that she is a woman fundamentally unfulfilled by contemporary motherhood.” So, instead of happily packing her children’s lunchbox, LAZY MOM seems content to contemplate the absurd pathos of a single piece of pre-sliced bread sealed in a Ziploc bag. More elaborately, she makes a “birthday cake” out of clear gelatin, inside of which swims pieces of romaine, a medallion of red onion, and a few slices American cheese, still in their wrappers. It’s really through this madcap form of art-making that LAZY MOM transcends the everyday for a moment of aesthetic pleasure that sometimes bridges to profound joy.
